While mainstream popularity of emo can be seen as simply the third wave of punk, it itself can be split into various waves. The most well known is the third wave which took off at the end of the 90's, early 00's and continues to present.
This wave spawned from the end of punk revivial and bands which carried on the harder sound Offspring and Pennywise had laid down for them, notably bands like Billy Talent, Hawthorne Heights and Bullet For My Valentine. It then continued it's venture into the mainstream with bands such as Fall Out Boy, Finch and Taking Back Sunday giving it a more mainstream less hardcore sound.
Of course, with the move towards mainstream, the original emo fans have somewhat denounced the new arrivals as part of the emo scene. |
