Heather "Nova" Frith was born on July 6, 1967 in Bermuda. As a child, Heather spent most of her time with her family traveling throughout the world on their forty-foot family boat. It was within this time on their boat, in which Heather began to become interested in music. At the age of eight, Heather was already writing her own songs, with inspiration from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, as well as many artists, from which her mother had converted their records to tapes before the voyage. By the age of fourteen, Heather learned how to play the guitar, because as she said, "I needed something to back me up."
In 1987, Heather decided that she was ready to move off of the boat, and enrolled in the Rhode Island School of Performing Arts, where she could study film making, as well as painting. It didn't take long before she realized that her true calling was in writing and playing music.
During her college years, Heather was highly influenced by musicians Patti Smith, and Lou Reed so much so, that she decided to become a professional musician. She moved to New York, where she attempted to land a record contract, but no one was interested. Depressed, Heather moved to London in the late 1980's with only her guitar and a small bag full of clothes. In 1990, she produced her first mini-album, These Walls. The tracks on her first album were all based upon her personal experiences of the very tough life she grew up with.
Heather finally caught a break, with the song, "Truth and Bone", getting recognized by musician Felix Tod. It was with this support, in which she was able to release her first full length album in 1993, entitled Glow Stars. Only 5000 copies of this album were made, but it was a good start in turning around her life. Later that year, she released a second album, Spirit in You, where she received some very positive support from a few major music magazines. Heather then made a major career move in changing her name to Heather Nova, as it was too hard to pronounce her last name of Frith. In October of that year, Heather released her first live album, Blow, in which she painted her own cover, revealing her great artistic abilities.
In 1994, Heather's popularity continued to grow, as she released her second studio album, Oyster, and also went on a world tour, which included over 300 concerts. Audiences responded well to Heather, and especially enjoyed her acoustic songs, where she played and sung with only a cellist and a percussionist. With the fame also came fatigue, and after nearly two years on the road, playing in various gigs, Heather returned home to Bermuda to relax and seek new inspiration for her music.
While in Bermuda, she couldn't help herself from writing music, and in 1998, she released Siren, in which she sings about her life at sea with her family. The album became popular, and one song, "London Rain", even became the theme song for the popular American television show, Dawson's Creek.
Heather's peaceful life in Bermuda could only last so long, and in 2000, she began another tour for her new album, Wonderlust. She released another new studio album in September, 2001, in which she entitled South. 2001 also marked the year in which Heather married her longtime producer, Felix Todd. In 2002, Heather changed directions slightly in her career, writing a book of poetry called The Sorrowjoy. The book contained 45 original poems, written by Heather, and 14 drawings.
In August, 2003, she returned to her music career, and released a new album entitled Storm. Heather really connected with this particular album, as she produced it independently, without a record company forcing deadlines down her throat, as had been the case with her recording company in England. She eventually sold the rights to the album to a recording company for distribution, but felt good that she had made every decision about the album, without any outside interference. Heather had her first child, Sebastian, in early 2004, but that has yet to slow her down, as she has still been appearing in new videos, and constantly writing new singles. |
