Consisting of Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers, Dire Straits have produced classic riffs that have become synonymous with the sound of the band with rock and roll classics tat include Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing.
Mark Knopfler leads the band on guitar and vocals with his younger browser Mark on guitar, John on bass and Pick on drums. They played their first gig at a punk festival under the name of Cafe Racers however they changed their name when signing up to Vertigo records. In 1978 they released their first self titled LP and later signed up to Warner Brothers in the US recording Communique.
Their most popular album, Brothers in Arms featured the songs So Far Away, Walk of Life and Money for Nothing, it went straight into the UK charts at number one where it remained for three weeks. It also reached number one in the United States and a whole host of other countries inclouding Canada, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, France, Germany, Greece, Norway, Spain, Swede, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.
In 1991 the band were back together to release a new album, On Every Street however it failed to produce any hit singles. They released a live album two years later and have not been back together since although Mark Knopfler has released a solo album named Golden Heart. |
